in two thousand so i talked more about what's going on and joining me from mexico city is investigative journalist andrew kenneth andrew thank you so much for coming on. good. so andrew let's first talk about the mood in mexico city right now have the protests ended why don't you set the scene for our audience. yeah there's definitely more protests being organized all of them are the only basis here in mexico city and it's far as the mood concerned it's one of tension and security and certainly a lot of folks are bracing for what the return of a party that will next over seventy one years actually mean especially when the first day of this return included a fatality three very serious injuries and well over one hundred people arrested during what was so pretty raucous three rockets resisted the problem though with the arrest and actually also looking injuries as well is that apparently none of them occurred with the folks that were actually involved instructions that one of

the anarchist groups that are playing responsibility for the resistance which is really trying to penetrate a perimeter fence that was about three miles away from the think that beneath that was informing which was the mexican congress here it's the city. they were trying to penetrate the perimeter fence and they came out with a statement saying that none of our comrades none of our people are in jail or in solidarity with the people that are jail and then reports came out as well from a variety of human groups saying that actually a lot of these folks that were jailed were just literally picked the street or were demonstrators were not involved in the search in their you tube videos that were uploaded that showed a guy just eating your talk a standard that literally picked up among the prey it was really mad it's another guy in the street that got picked up and i guess that a lot of peaceful demonstrators so not only was there excessive force that resulted in injuries as in serious critical condition people who need to do it which made it last them vision one of their eyes. in and. through head on.

head injuries weren't even his brain might and that's what really gruesome photos there. and again it was well at least a death that's because by moving organizers if not by officials and so again a lot of the chest of course not exactly successfully targeted if it even was trying to be targeted at the folks involved in the search itself it looks like the main cause of much much of these interest injuries and and the possible death was the fact that the police were aiming their tear gas canisters not near it but directly at protesters this is because the sources and was one of the leading causes of the injuries and that's what's causing the certainty the tension and even the fear across mexico definitely all of a lot of condemnation coming from international human rights groups it sounds like there's a lot of aggressive force from that from the right place thank you for explaining all that confirming some of these rumors. are these latest protests in mexico a part of the oh so. movement that was also equated with the so-called mexican

spring or is it just branched off in a kind of just a whole swell of other movement and people there. just among human rights groups that were issuing concern economists including and the senior national by the way. the local official human rights group specific which is usually pretty stated so there's definitely a lot of concern not just among the protesters but among experts in human rights abuses as well. as far as. those concerned it's important to realize that this move kicked off by one hundred thirty one people out of many university they uploaded their their id right after a very famous protest that kicked the whole movement to the internet to show that they were back to this because the first reaction by the next news media was that the students are just getting paid by the call of the campaign or something like that and so they uploaded their id showed otherwise. and embarrass the next meeting

and you don't want to clean up a presidential debate before the election so the hundred thirty one people to be better on any kind of we're definitely of all the protests yesterday were definitely organized but that may not support the property destruction it definitely did not i spoke to several of the folks involved in that even less the protest when a property destruction was happening and therein lies a bit of the division with the movement but they nonetheless condemnations about the arrest the standard solidarity with them with all the protestors and they are very concerned that again the targeting of these protesters is very haphazard almost. completely chaotic and literally it was found and so they issued statements against it and that's pretty much their position reiterated their past the stance that they don't engage a proper discussion of destruction and. that that's basically their official stance toward forward this movement now again let's move on really quickly there's a lot i want to get into and we don't have time but i wanted you to explain the

significance of of free returning to power after being ousted and why so many people are protesting this rain and also a lot of people are protesting televisa. the televised coverage of the general elections on its bias talk about those two specific aspects of these protests and. well during the time time that this movement really surgeon started this past may blowing right into just this last saturday and even on the court that they have been organized there was reports that were surfacing that confirms suspicions by the movement that they've really had for a long time reports that surfaced in the guardian showing official documents and papers with their links between the benefits of campaign and televisa arranging spots arranging people treatment there was even a routinely tribulation at one point that showed that the state department acknowledged as well that there was a systematic favorable treatment by the lebanese then presidential candidate so. it's recent. gratian and what protesters and social movements like are calling. of

a presidential so-called victory. much than any of those being labeled as the televisa candidate he is the candidate that never really had very clear positions or apologies and this is it shows that actually at last you. book fair where there was just like serious fellow reporter of ours what is three most influential book and was and that's a difficult question for a lot of us into in terms of choosing three bucks at the put it means three books until we actually struggled on cross two of mexico's most famous authors is the burning name divide on the answer and showed in many ways i had a very early stage actually mean this is way back in last november why folks really as kind of a fabricated media not necessarily a qualified presidential candidate one of the guys that got his me mixed up with carlos fuentes he called and rico and we keep one thing in our lives when this came

out with a very telling quote he said looking at those every right not to read my books and it's very clear that he hasn't but he has no right to be. and that is again one of the leading concerns in addition to the repression of the violence that really harkens back to the seventy one year reign of the free that chav and. indeed and one of your special things andrew is the drug war you know a lot of countries in latin america a lot of their leaders are rethinking their approach to the drug war and especially in light of a lot of legalization efforts and the united states i mean mexico's at the crosshairs here of the drug war do you think putin yet though will be reproaching this issue or will he just kind of state of course what do you think. well in the first initially enough especially for folks like us who follow the progress very closely very innocently enough the proclamation in it after he won the election was that he would not change mackinson if it gets. changes to the security policy

so right away we knew that there was not going to be any closer in the nation and more more than the limited kind of things that we've seen so basically there wasn't really big changes expected but in talking to other fellow journalists who've been covering this for a very long time the feeling is that if anything's going to change it's going to be an increase the kind of favorable treatment that we saw from the towards one cartel in particular seen a lower cartel perhaps expanding at the more cartels this is kind of like the general approach of the preop and the cartels kind of having corrupt arrangements sort of under the table deals kind of you know share territory so to speak. and i mean we do know is that the pond according to the expose legal security experts and analysts and i guess that journalists alike has had a very favorable and longstanding arrangement with the chino cartel this is actually documented by national public radio analysis that found that each leading

highlevel arrest at any of the leading cartels was indeed with the scene or cartel in this this is the biggest cartel in mexico the biggest cartel arguably in the world and so what started surfacing really was the idea eerie kind of that there was people treatment being given out. in order to kind of calm the drug and there's more than one part of the orders more violent you know there's more destruction and kind of and sort of a kind of a white flag arrangement this was not in there was even links and this is exposed by my thought additional gagan of nine several of the case in the leading investigated but here in mexico that there were links between the fast and furious program and with systematic kind of institute of fact a furious weapons winding up the reckoning and so that you are correct the difference in the media narrative the fact that there is what is being lost when it . gets burned actually also by whistleblowers and sworn testimony in congress. that

fiscal cliff fiscal cliff fiscal cliff if you completely fell off the mainstream news clip this week here's what you might have missed can you hear me now no more reindeer games in washington president obama and house speaker john boehner finally on speaking terms but the question is are they speaking each other's language when it comes to the fiscal cliff falling off the fiscal cliff into freefall is there a soft landing or not would it be the end of the world if washington failed to reach a deal to stop the more than half a billion dollars in spending cuts and tax increases from going into effect my next guest says the fiscal cliff is simply y2k fair all over again which amounted to nothing as i recall i agree we're not going to go over the cliff will hug him you know new year's eve he will be out of the work. so basically lots of speculation and very little substance but i can't say i'm not surprised particular day when i

look at the recent rhetoric from this do nothing congress take us for example armed services committee just describe the looming defense cuts as quote an unacceptable risk that will quote severely diminished america's global posture right this would be devastating to a country that right now spends as much on its military as the next ten countries combined so would this be the end of defense as we know it that's exactly the question that my next case explored on a panel called the fiscal cliff what does this mean for defense and national security i'm joined now by colonel douglas macgregor thank you so much for taking the time sure so there is so much hype about this lawmakers are saying that this would be absolutely paralyzing to the military what's your response well let's understand what they're talking about in real terms right now if sequel happens which is at this point looks inevitable but it may not be you're looking at fifty five to sixty billion dollars of cuts next year you're looking at a little more than five hundred billion over ten years. in reality when you begin

adding up everything that is committed to defense and to its budget beyond the five hundred six hundred billion that we normally spend their one hundred billion dollars more. all sorts of departments national security agency central intelligence agency other organs united states government are also part of the defense establishment provide support for you're almost up to a trillion dollars the issue is not the impact on the defense establishment it's not going to make any difference in fundamental terms but the impact in local areas places like san diego to depend on billions of dollars of income from the defense industry that's the kind of impact that it will have and you've been in the military for a long time you've got it you have advantage point a lot of us don't have are there any specific defense programs that could be cut or even abolished and not sent well i think there are i think to be perfectly blunt right now the f. thirty five program is in a lot of trouble there's a lot of struggle inside the program several people have told me that you have got

to cancel the f. thirty five b. this is the vertical takeoff and landing version of the f. thirty five to quote unquote save the program there are many people who are prepared to cut it because remember they see on the hill defense cuts in in different settings when you look at the f. thirty five if you look at the army's proposed to the ground combat vehicle thirty four billion dollars to build an eighty four ton vehicle which which strikes most rational people is absurd the hill says we don't need of six we can do without it it's not going to debilitate us in the meantime they're interested in sustaining other programs that have to do with the redistribution of taxpayer money so you just wrote an op ed for time dot com where you lay out kind of three options that we can solve this can you lay those not really sure very briefly the first thing is we've got to reduce the regional unified commands your viewers may not know it but we have commands that essentially cover the entire globe right now we treat the

entire world as a military backyard for the united states it's unnecessary it's unneeded we don't need it the rest of the world probably doesn't want it so we. we can afford to cut back on those then we need as a as a consequence to start consolidating hundreds of headquarters into a smaller number of joint force commands we have too many senior officers for fifteen million men during world war two in the army in the army air corps we had four four star generals today for a force of maybe eight hundred eighty thousand in the army in the air force we have twenty three four stores the thing has grown out of control largely as a result of the cold war you know i'm not going to sit here and of course defend not cutting defense but i can't help but think it's almost a distraction when when we have these giant corporations and wall street not being taxed i mean can we solve this whole fiscal cliff by just taxing those no no unfortunately we can't we face something and this is this is what your viewers need to understand most americans haven't got this yet we're in new territory we have

a sixteen trillion dollar debt. it has a potentially crushing impact people here in washington say you know that that doesn't matter what difference does it make we can borrow as much money as we like forever wrong we can't if you don't grow economically you can't attract investment truth is we're not really growing theoretically at one point two percent and falling europe is in serious trouble what happens in europe what happens in china where they're preparing for a hard landing all of these things will have an impact here we're in a lot of trouble you can't retire that debt so no you could confiscate all the wealth from the top five percent of the american people it would make a dent really it wouldn't make a try you know have your talk about running the government for six months. all right well let's talk about the new the the new fiscal year two thousand and thirteen bill that was just passing and it's about the senate waiting on the house but it's an increase of seventeen billion dollars is this

a gross contradiction we're talking about you know we're facing this looming cliff that we're about to pull off this is the whole point that i took that we have to this is the point the senate is living in fantasyland the people in the house know this is not sustainable there is more reality in the house and in the senate the senate is the political equivalent of a hollow in political terms united states they are remote from reality with very few exceptions and the republicans and democrats behave like a group of of drunks accusing each other of alcoholism and other words everyone is spending into oblivion it's going to stop because we can't afford it and it's really going to stop after we go off multiple cliffs and we can't borrow any more money that's what lies in the future so you're i mean what you're proposing doesn't seem like what a lot of lawmakers are assessing as is the impending doom that they need to to really realistically approach so how is this all going to play out when you run out of money you have to do something else look when did the british leave india they

didn't believe india when they should have which was really raw. after world war one and it made no sense to stay they were losing money they left when they were broke after world war two when they had nothing and they had no choice but to leave people when they're given no choice and they have nobody make hard decisions were will take another couple of years to get there but we're going to begin to see some of it over the next twenty four months. and you know let's talk about in this recent bill you know they're increasing it by seventeen billion dollars at the same time they're cutting thirty thousand personnel i mean it's just so bizarre it's like it just seems like you're right they are living in this fantasy land when you hit on something else the generals in the annals unfortunately historically are quite willing to send soldiers sailors airmen and marines on to the street but we never lose any generals we never lose any apples that's the problem with the massive command overhead the bureaucratic structure that we don't need and that's

one of our problems four thousand soldiers also means four thousand men in support of a four star headquarters so if you're a choice four thousand troops that fight or a four star headquarters troops that fight go away that's when you have to have civilian leadership that's informed decisive determined it's not there yet very interesting indeed thank you for breaking down some of that rhetoric and it's a convoluted so really helps everyone check out your op ed for time dot com very informative piece thank you for coming on douglas macgregor to share your time. i. all right guys here's the latest news on the war on terror front u.s. drones killed three militants in pakistan's taliban controlled region of north waziristan and by militant i mean the term that the white house uses for any human being blown to pieces by a u.s.

somewhat the whole of it is right around the corner let's talk about what's on president obama's wish list this year my guess is that it's an upgrade of his favorite toy killer unmanned robots which is why i like to call president obama the drone carrying a pack today's hash tag is officially drone king a phrase i coined on the show that's i'm picking up some steam in the social media world so keep throwing that into the twitter verse so anyways yes it's a great year for drones and you won't believe what kind of upgrades they've been getting lately check this one out the d h s it's funny a new underwater robot made to look like a tuna fish through a contract with a corporation boston engineering court of the agency the natural looking design is perfect for covert security missions and look at this what looks like science fiction is actually a rowboat jellyfish being developed by virginia tech for the u.s. navy with the goal of one day putting out thomas robot jellyfish and every body of water around the world yep. drones aren't limited to the skies anymore although we

are seeing a record number of licenses grant granted for unmanned drones to fly over the u.s. take a look at this map it was put together by the electronic frontier foundation for a lawsuit against the f.a.a. and shows you the number of licenses the u.s. military has to fly drones in u.s. air space the records obtained by the e.f.-s. also reveal that the air force has been testing a whole host of new drones like the who much. which could be launched from and land on practically any environment at a fraction of the size of the larger deadlier drones that have been used and countless targeted assassination campaigns overseas then there's the scan eagle developed by insitu these puppies host a camera turret that can track moving targets for extended periods of time even if the drone is moving away from the target while there are countless other drone
